Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effect of occlusal splints on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and their relationship with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) symptoms. Method: A systematic review of the literature was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, the Cochrane Library, ProQuest, Epistemonikos, Google Academic, among others. In the end, 20 articles that met the selection criteria were examined. Results and conclusion: Of the 159 studies identified, 70 were preselected and, after careful evaluation, 20 articles were included in the systematic review. The application of occlusal splints has potential advantages in the treatment of TMD; however, studies suggest that its effectiveness varies depending on the case. This highlights the importance of tailoring treatment to each individual and continuing high-quality research to consolidate clinical evidence.
