Objective: to compare onychophagia and onychotylomania in university students. Method: Systematic review of 15 articles. Results and Conclusion: Onychophagia, more prevalent, is associated with parafunctional habits that can generate dental alterations, such as malocclusions, incisal wear and an increased risk of oral infections, while onychotylomania, less common but more severe, is closely linked to obsessive-compulsive disorders and periungual lesions that predispose to systemic infections and permanent scarring, both disorders share triggering factors such as stress and anxiety.
