Abstract

Objective: to analyse aerobic microorganisms present on dental instruments. Method: Systematic review of 15 articles. Results and Conclusion: The evidence reviewed highlights that microbial contamination, particularly by aerobic microorganisms, on dental instruments represents a significant risk to patient safety, especially due to the generation of aerosols and inadequate disinfection and sterilisation practices. Methods such as autoclaving, disinfectant solutions (sodium hypochlorite, glutaraldehyde) and rapid spore testing have proven to be effective in ensuring the elimination of microorganisms, although it has been shown that repeated sterilisation cycles can compromise the physical and mechanical properties of instruments such as endodontic files.
