Abstract

Objective: to analyse the antimicrobial effectiveness of bee honey on strains of Porphyromona gingivalis. Method: Systematic review of 25 articles. Results and Conclusion: The reviewed studies highlight that honey, especially Manuka honey, possesses significant antimicrobial action thanks to its bioactive compounds, such as methylglyoxal and polyphenols, which inhibit bacterial growth and biofilm formation. The ability of honey to combine with antibiotics reinforces its role as an adjunct in therapies against resistant bacteria. Although several varieties of honey have shown effectiveness, the need to standardise their use and optimise their clinical application is essential to ensure consistent results in the control of P. gingivalis.
