Breastfeeding versus bottle feeding: its impact on maxillary development and oral health [Lactancia materna versus biberón: su impacto en el desarrollo maxilar y su salud bucodental]

Objective: to analyse and compare the effects of breastfeeding versus bottle feeding on maxillary structure development and oral health. Method: systematic review following PRISMA methodology. Nineteen articles published between 2019 and 2024 were analysed from the PubMed, Scopus, Elsevier and SciELO databases, selected from 300 articles initially identified. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a lower prevalence of malocclusions, promoting adequate maxillofacial development through stimulation of orofacial muscles and correct nasal breathing. It reduced the risk of anterior open bite, posterior crossbite and mouth breathing. It acted as a protective factor against caries up to 12 months of age. Prolonged bottle use was associated with atypical sucking patterns, increased risk of malocclusions (OR 2.16-2.39), alterations in maxillary dental arch dimensions, harmful oral habits, and increased incidence of caries, especially with sugary liquids.
