Bruxism in relation to the temporomandibular joint [Bruxismo en relación con la articulación temporomandibular]

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between bruxism and temporomandibular joint disorders, identifying risk factors, symptoms, and effective treatments. Method: Systematic review based on PRISMA criteria. Fifteen articles were analysed from 47 initially identified in PubMed, SciELO, and other databases, published between 2010 and 2023. Results: A significant association was confirmed between bruxism and temporomandibular dysfunction due to mechanical overload in the TMJ. The main risk factors identified were stress, anxiety and occlusal interference. Nocturnal bruxism prevailed over diurnal bruxism. Cephalometric records proved useful for assessing occlusal vertical dimension. Multidisciplinary treatment includes occlusal splints, relaxation therapies, physiotherapy, and dental interventions. Conclusion: Bruxism is a significant risk factor for temporomandibular disorders. A comprehensive approach is required, considering psychological, systemic, and structural aspects.
