Abstract

Objective: to analyse acne as an influential factor in self-esteem and self-concept in adolescents. Method: A systematic review was carried out, following the guidelines established by the PRISMA declaration, 15 studies published in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science were selected. Conclusion: Adolescents with acne experience a distortion of their body image, leading to feelings of insecurity, shame and social rejection, factors that erode their self-confidence. Consequently, the relationship between acne and psychological disorders, such as anxiety and depression, amplifies this negative impact, creating a vicious cycle that affects both emotional well-being and interpersonal relationships. While dermatological treatments can improve physical appearance and alleviate some of the emotional burden, a holistic approach including psychological interventions is essential to address the profound impact acne has on self-esteem.
